Tutkimushuone (Research Room) -project was site-specific artistic research project taking place at the former Lapinlahti mental hospital in Helsinki during October-November 2018. Group of artists, curators and a researcher settled in to the hospital with the aim to investigate, think and explore the place collectively. We invited experts from various fields as well as the public to discuss and contemplate with us. We reflected how presumptions of healing and curing influence the ideas and technologies created to achieve them at different times in history.
Tutkimushuone functioned hereby as a platform to explore possibilities of creating significance through artistic research as well as to examine existing interpretations and perceptions of Lapinlahti hospital and its history as an environment, which was built with the aim to construct a place that is healing in itself.
Tutkimushuone project group comprises of the artists’ participation of Harrie Liveart, Mari Mäkiö and Ninni Wager as well as of the researcher and writer Maija Kerko and the curators Julia Kartesalo and Anna-Kaisa Koski.
At the end of the project a performative walking tour open to the public was organized, where researcher Maija Kerko guided the participants along the physical and mental borders of the place together with interventions from each of the artist.
